UK Radon Tee co-ordinators, ProTen Services were recently asked to deliver a seminar on the risks of radon gas to a group of health and safety advisors in the South West of England. A one day conference was organised by South West Employers (SWE), a forum for employers where training, guidance and practical assistance on employment-related issues is offered. Many of the members are from local authorities and public sector organisations.
The South West of England is traditionally thought of as the area most affected by radon gas in the UK, and indeed in many parts of Devon and Cornwall it has been estimated that greater than 30% of properties contain unacceptably high levels of radon.
It must be remembered however that radon can affect homes and workplaces in any part of the country, and the only way to know whether a building contains high levels of radon is to carry out a radon test. ProTen Services' motto when it comes to radon is "To Test Is Best", and pleasingly several delegates who attended the seminar took this message on board and have since ordered sets of radon detectors for their properties.
US non-profit organisation, CanSAR (Cancer Survivors Against Radon) is dedicated to preventing radon-induced lung cancer and saving lives through education and awareness, and is sponsoring the Radon Tee World Trek 2010. The campaign aims to bring social awareness to communities through the power of photos, videos and personal stories.
ProTen Services are taking the Tee on a national tour and will be adding photos to the social media campaign at www.facebook.com/radontee.
